Habitat for Humanity of Kankakee County selects "partner families" to become Habitat homeowners. Habitat for Humanity follows to a nondiscriminatory policy of family selection. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing partner families. Partner families are always selected based on their level of need, ability to pay and willingness to partner.

Habitat homes are not given to partner families. To be able to purchase a Habitat home, the partner family must contribute 500 hours of "sweat equity," a cash down payment and closing costs. The balance of the purchase price is financed by Habitat for Humanity of Kankakee County with an interest-free loan.
